2154  1840 (Jun 23) entire to England with fine and largely complete strike of 'GENERAL (crown) POST OFFICE/HOBART TOWN/VDL/23JU23/1840' large oval datestamp in black (black ink used in 1840 only) with 8th November arrival datestamp in red. The contents advise of the healthy state of trade in the Colony especially for rum, whisky & sherry, with the writer advising that wines should be sent out in exchange for wools, some trivail aging.

[Prior to Melbourne becoming an important port in the mid-1840s mail was often routed through Sydney]

The notice advertises land for sale or rent in an area of WA earmarked for the proposed development of the Australind settlement and includes a long extract from the narrative of a survey of Western Australia conducted by Captain Philip King. Folds and small faults. A fascinating insight into the early development of the Colony.
