VICTORIA

2161  1853 (Dec 19) original contract for J.S. Campbell & Co printing of 2d Queen-on-Throne (SG #19-22) and 1d & 3d Halflengths (SG #23-24) comprising (i) "Bond for printing and gumming stamps" and (ii) "Specimen of gumming" (actually the precise stock utilised for the stamp printings). The articles are signed by James S. Campbell, Rudolph Hackmann & James Fergusson and variously witnessed. This unique and historical contract is the earlier of the two contemporary printing contracts in private hands, and is widely regarded as the more desirable (the other is for later printings of Half-Lengths only). 2162 A1854-55 Imperf 1/- Rose-Pink and Blue Die 2 SG #34 used with 1d lilac-rose and 3d deep blue Campbell & Fergusson Half-Lengths (SG 28b, 31c) on 1856 (AU 15) re-directed entire originally from London to Melbourne, with 6d Embossed, endorsed per Red Jacket... Victorian adhesives stuck over original stamp when re-directed to Tarrengower. An exceptional cover, particularly having the rare Die 2 stamp. Part of the Hancock correspondance. Not recorded in the Barwis census of Half-Length covers, Only two other registered redirected covers recorded, both of which are part of the same correspondence. [4d inland letter rate plus 1/- registration fee.]

VICTORIA - Postal History

2182  1852 (Sep 7) entire sent from a succesful gold miner to his wife in London endorsed "Per Steamer 'Chusan' via Singapore" being an experimental voyage of this vessel prior to P&O's full contract commencing in Mar 1853, 'PAID/(crown)/SE7/[1852]/MELBOURNE' departure datestamp, rated "3" in red and "1/4" in black, London & Bury St Edmonds backstamps. Letter contents advise of the writer's shipment of 50oz of gold per 'Eagle' and also discusses the arrival of mail vessels. Fine condition. ['Chusan' carried mail to Singapore arriving Oct 13, with mail then transferred to the 'Malta' which arrived in Southampton on Dec 24. Kirk in 'British Maritime Postal History Vol 1' does not record a single cover from this voyage]
