INDIA - Postal History

1491  1941 (Mar 6) 'AV2' cover to Philadelphia with KGVI 2r, 8a & 3a6p (2r11a6p per ½oz airmail) tied by Lucknow datestamps, censored in Delhi, with triangular censor handstamp, sealed with brown tape, Type 5 circular 'A.V.2.' handstamp applied in Hong Kong with Victoria transit datestamp, fully written up with details of transit route. [AV2 markings (unlike OAT, which were unauthorised by the UPU) were officially used in 'open' bags to alert the postal authorities at exchange points that an AV2 form was enclosed. They were only used for items sent by airmail.]

LEBANON - Postal History

1513  1941 (Nov 18) Akel & Bagdo (Tripoli) 'AV2' cover to GB with 57½p franking paying combined airmail & postage and tied by Tripoli datestamps, sent by train to Beirut where 'CP'-in circle censor handstamp applied, thence by BOAC airmail to Cairo where mss 'AV2' marking applied, the likely airmail route thereafter (via Africa) is fully written up with a map of the presumed route included.
