ICELAND - Postal History

3128377  1942 (Feb 14) cover to Portugal with 1kr solo franking paying combined postage and airmail fee, stamp tied by Reykjavik datestamp, censored in UK with Type XIII 'OAT' cachet in violet (37x10mm, unframed with diamond shaped stops after letters) applied in Prestwick, UK. Probable route fully described in vendor's typed annotations. [This cover would have contained an 'undercover' letter for forwarding to Denmark. The addressee Dr Helgi P Briem was the Icelandic Trade Commissioner to Portugal. He accepted such letters from Iceland to forward to Denmark, direct mail having been suspended after Germany's 1940 invasion of Denmark, meaning that mail had to pass through a neutral country such as Portugal.]
