PS 1841-53 Irish Group [1] 1853 attractive Masonic Lodge printed cover with imperf 1d red, cancelled with '46' of Ballymena straight-line 'CARLOUGH/[GLEN]ARM' arrival on face; [2] poor opened out 1882 cover from Carrickfergus to Coleraine; [3] 1949 use of 2½d blue KGVI strip of 6 on Parcel label from Belfast to Larne; [4] mss "2½ Paid" on front from Belfast to Larne; [5] two fronts one with Prime Minister cachet the other Dept of Finance cachet. Plus Nov 1974 piece from England to Western Australia with 'DELAYED EN ROUTE/-AIRCRAFT HI-JACK=' on face. [The plane was hijacked at Dubai and flown to Tunisia, The hijackers eventually surrendered, no mail was lost.] Also two WWI Red Cross silk fund raising badges, 1938 Gambia cover to UK, 1935 Canada Silver Jubilee set on piece with first day cancel (12 items)

1178  1855 (Jan 1) double rate cover from Beechworth (mss backstamp) to Ireland, marked "Per Steamer Argo" and "Registered Letter", rated "2/-" and "1/6", bearing 1/- Octagonal pair (small faults) tied by poor BO '55' and manuscript "Regitd Letter" and, on reverse, Melbourne, London (MR18/1855) and arrival datestamps. A scarce retaliatory rate cover. [The ship letter rate had been reduced to 6d by the UK on 1 October 1854, but Victoria refused to participate and the UK retaliated by increasing its rates. Victoria relented and reduce the rate to 6d on 1 July 1855, the UK then reducing its rate accordingly.]

Fine red Maltese cross cancel, also very fine double-oval ''IMPERIAL HOTEL/POST-PAID/DUBLIN' on face, over weight and chamfered box 'MORE/TO/PAY' and mss "2" on face. A bit soiled and tatty, but nice cancellations.
