AUSTRALIA - Postal History

1013  1921 (Feb 24) PPC to France (showing seated Aborigine), damaged in transit aboard SS Kalyan during a gale in the Mediterranean, the mail unloaded at Marseilles with 'ACCIDENT en MER/COURRIER INONDE' (accident at sea, flooded ship) Kalyan Type 5 cachet in blue applied (probably at Paris), Fremantle machine departure cancel on reverse, front and back of card have separated due to the water damage. We cannot recall seeing another item from Australia that was involved in this incident. [see Hoggarth & Gwynn at p.206 ]

1097  1854 (Jul 21) outer "per Noina" to Boston USA with imperf 3d Laureate (complete margins) tied by Sydney bars cancel, rated "1/-" & "40", with '45' handstamp applied (scarce on Australian mail) to indicate the extra 5c fee for US internal letter postage, some small blemishes. Typed notes of shipping route included.

[The Croesus broke both propellers en route via Cape Horn and proceeded to Ascension Island under sail, once a new propeller was fitted she continued to Calais via St Vincent (Cape Verde) & Southampton]
