1448 | ✉ | | 1868 (Jan) large-part cover (opened-out to display the stamps that were folded over the edges) to Locarno with P12½ 1d vermilion x5 & 1/- yellow-green pair cancelled with squiggly lines attributed to Waimea (unrecorded by Wooders), Hokitika transit backstamp of JA22/68, fine strike of the scarce 'REGISTERED/PD/S/30MR68/LONDON' "overlapped duplex" transit d/s in red, 'ANGL/AMB CALAIS A' TPO cds & French 'CHARGE' handstamp, Swiss postage due handstamp plus backstamp of Basel, Lucerne & Locarno & undated-oval '[cross]/GIUMAGLIO' arrival handstamp. A famous item, that oozes character. Carried per "Kaikoura", departed Wellington 7/2/1868; arrived Panama 5/3/1868; mails arrived Plymouth 28/3/1868. [While this might appear to be overpaid 1d for a ¼oz letter, the Swiss handstamp shows the weight as 8gr (= just over ¼oz) so the correct rate was 1/4d + 1/10d registration = 1/- plus an extra 5d per ¼oz x2 - see Ellott Vol 3 at page 20-47: note 'f' - which means that 3d & 6d stamps are missing (apparently from the upper-right).] Ex Woolfe & Benvie.
