VICTORIA

1145 A1854-55 Imperf Calvert Woodblocks 6d Dull Orange [Pos 10] SG #32a used with 3d deep blue Beaded Oval on laid paper (SG #88) on 1860 (Dec 26) cover from Melbourne to London via Marseilles, tied by Barred Numeral '1'. 6d with very large margins 3 sides, and believed to be the latest recorded date of use of this stamp on cover. 1174  1849 (May 3) outer from Warnambool to Portland, marked "Registered", rated "11d" in red, showing scarce framed 'MISSENT TO/[POR]T FAIRY' and, on reverse, crown oval NSW datestamps of Port Fairy & Portland (poor). [Postage was based on distance and for the 65 miles concerned it should have been 8d, so 3d overpaid. Although "Warnambool" is endorsed on the reverse and the sender has a Warrnambool address it is possible the letter was carried to Melbourne and posted there, in which case 11d would be the correct rate.] Ex Ray Kelly, Max Watson, Brian Peace.

[The circular written by the Dean of Melbourne H.B Macartney and distributed 'To the Merchants and Wealthy Proprietors of Melbourne' seeks donations to enable the church to purchase & fit-out a vessel to be used as a floating chapel off shore, as ship captains feared desertions when sailors were allowed to worship on land.]
