1010  1914 (Oct 28) cover bearing KGV 1d red, sent Melbourne to China, censored in Ceylon where resealed with stamp selvedge (with marginal Control), tied by 'OPENED UNDER MARTIAL LAW' handstamp, Censor/A handstamp at lower left, backstamped Shanghai. Enclosed letter has had section excised, apparently by censor. Important association with events that led to 1915 Singapore Mutiny.

There is no original flight material and the collection is organised on anniversaries, beginning with a 10th anniversary PPC x2 (one signed by Keith Smith & Wally Shiers), a 20th Anniversary Crome cover (signed by Keith Smith & Wally Shiers), the 50th anniversary is very well represented with 11 different facsimile vignettes and 31 different covers mainly from the race and many signed by the pilots, the last few pages cover the 60th, 70th and 75th anniversaries. An excellent basis for further development. (60+ items)

1013  1921 (Feb 24) PPC to France (showing seated Aborigine), damaged in transit aboard SS Kalyan during a gale in the Mediterranean, the mail unloaded at Marseilles with 'ACCIDENT en MER/COURRIER INONDE' (accident at sea, flooded ship) Kalyan Type 5 cachet in blue applied (probably at Paris), Fremantle machine departure cancel on reverse, front and back of card have separated due to the water damage. We cannot recall seeing another item from Australia that was involved in this incident. [see Hoggarth & Gwynn at p.206 ]
