1021  1874 (May 21) cover to Kapunda with 2d Chalons x2 paying reduced rate of 2d per ½oz x2, stamps tied by Rays '96' with adjacent Maryborough and Adelaide datestamps, routed to Adelaide by sea and thence by rail to Kapunda, some mild aging. [On January 1st 1874 the Intercolonial rate was dropped to 2d per ½oz, only four covers from Queensland to South Australia are recorded at the reduced rate.] See also Lot 1022.

Possible unique example of penalty rate cover to Queensland. [In 1864 Southampton & Marseilles rates were briefly increased from 10d to 1/4d per ½oz, however this was quickly rescinded after strong protests from the Australian Colonies]
