1174  1849 (May 3) outer from Warnambool to Portland, marked "Registered", rated "11d" in red, showing scarce framed 'MISSENT TO/[POR]T FAIRY' and, on reverse, crown oval NSW datestamps of Port Fairy & Portland (poor). [Postage was based on distance and for the 65 miles concerned it should have been 8d, so 3d overpaid. Although "Warnambool" is endorsed on the reverse and the sender has a Warrnambool address it is possible the letter was carried to Melbourne and posted there, in which case 11d would be the correct rate.] Ex Ray Kelly, Max Watson, Brian Peace.

A scarce retaliatory rate cover. [The ship letter rate had been reduced to 6d by the UK on 1 October 1854, but Victoria refused to participate and the UK retaliated by increasing its rates. Victoria relented and reduce the rate to 6d on 1 July 1855, the UK then reducing its rate accordingly.]
