[Postage was based on distance and for the 65 miles concerned it should have been 8d, so 3d overpaid. Although "Warnambool" is endorsed on the reverse and the sender has a Warrnambool address it is possible the letter was carried to Melbourne and posted there, in which case 11d would be the correct rate.] Ex Ray Kelly, Max Watson, Brian Peace.

A scarce retaliatory rate cover. [The ship letter rate had been reduced to 6d by the UK on 1 October 1854, but Victoria refused to participate and the UK retaliated by increasing its rates. Victoria relented and reduce the rate to 6d on 1 July 1855, the UK then reducing its rate accordingly.]
